Updated: 3/23/2010Okay to be gay in Malaysian films, if character repents
Film-makers can depict homosexuals for the first time in strictly censored Malaysia -- so long as they repent or even go straight in the end, an industry group said Monday.Strict censorship rules in the mostly Muslim country mean books and films are routinely banned or scenes deleted that are deemed detrimental to moral values or religious sensitivities.

The new censorship guidelines reverse a ban on scenes featuring homosexuality, Malaysian Film Producers' Association president Ahmad Puad Onah said. But there's a catch.
"We are now allowed to show these scenes," he told AFP. "As long as we portray good triumphing over evil and there is a lesson learnt in the film, such as from a gay (character) who turns into a (straight) man.
"Previously we are not allowed to show these at all."
The new rules, he insists, will allow greater freedom of expression for film-makers. But kissing, undressing and obscenity scenes will still be banned.
"We can do almost anything now but we are urged to give due considerations on the film's impact on certain areas like public order, religion, socio-culture elements and moral values."
It is not just homosexuality, subjects such as illegal racing can also be depicted.
A New Sunday Times report at the weekend said a local movie "V3 Road Gangster" on illegal racing was being shown in the cinemas since it satisfied the rules as the illegal racers either died or were caught by police at the end.
Another movie that has recently passed Malaysian censors was a film featured the life of a transvestite. It will be screened in May.
The Film Censorship Board could not be reached for comment.

Heard the news for the first time last Sunday when I was on the way coming back to Kampar. My aunt recieved a News Update sms about this. She read it out loud.
"同性恋剧情将被允许播放.." [Something like that. Can't remember the whole sms.]
I was like "OH YES!! YESH!" [only in my mind of course] and felt like want to do my comical cheering [You would know how it looks like if you know me very well!].
But, instead I just sat still..Nah, don't want to embarrass myself in front of the adults.
I was thinking, "wow! That's so awesome! I'm starting to hate M'sia a little bit less! Ahh.. Will they show "Chloe" here? "
But, then, I just knew it wouldn't be so easy!! I just knew it!! *happy bubbles burst*
Gahh!! Stupid me, I'm so naive! Duh, they won't suddenly become that open-minded in one night! Don't you remember their brains are only peanut size?
Ugh...What disgust me the most is this sentence..
"As long as we portray good triumphing over evil and there is a lesson learnt in the film, such as from a gay (character) who turns into a (straight) man."
WTF? Homosexual = evil? So, the heterosexuals are saint? Puh-lease! Sexuality is not the one that decide a person's good or evil! It depends on the person's personality, okay?!
Furthermore, if you're gay, then you're gay! How can you just convert? Sexuality is not a choice that you get to choose like any choices in your life. If you're straight then you are, if you aren't then you aren't. You can't be "I want to be gay today." or "I was gay yesterday. Let's play straighty today! It will be so fun!" . It's so sick!
MSN Malaysia even has this poll for people to vote in it's homepage.
No question. I voted for the first! And, I'm so happy to see half of the people who voted think the same way as me! Glad to know M'sia is not fill with homophobic bigots!
Seriously, this totally is a rubbish! If they want to do it, just do it all the way! There's no meaning at all if they do it this way!
I really want to love my country. But, I just can't make myself to love it if they're like this! I will always look down on my own country if they keep on to be this narrow-minded.
Open up and accept the minority. Less hate, more love. The world will be more beautiful then you ever know!
To show my support, I'm gonna use this "Pride Flag" personas for the whole weekend! Go Rainbow Team!
